Gracie Gold Wins 2014 US Figure Skating Championship

Graciegold_crop_north USA Today
It was a night of smiles and tears at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Boston on Saturday night.
Leading after the short program, 18-year-old Gracie Gold delivered a gorgeous performance under tremendous pressure in her free skate to capture her first national title.
Newcomer Polina Edmunds showed great poise in capturing second place, while Mirai Nagasu won over the crowd to finish third.

The favorite going into the competition, Ashley Wagner, failed to deliver at the highest level in either her short program or her free skate, cracking under the pressure of losing a potential Olympic spot as she did in 2010.
Wagner and the others will have to wait until Sunday to hear which three skaters will be selected to represent the U.S.A. at the 2014 Winter Olympics in February. With her pedigree and history with the U.S. national team, Wagner is positioned to steal a spot from one of the women who finished above her.
In other events on Saturday, Meryl Davis and Charlie White won their record sixth-straight national championship and will be headed back to the Olympics in ice dancing, while Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir won the pairs competition.

On Sunday, the men will face off in the free skate to determine their national champion, and the all-important Olympic announcement will finally be made. At last, we'll learn which men, women, pairs and ice dancers will form the U.S. Olympic Team on the road to Sochi.
